Driving through the streets of Cuba, Filipino director Lav Diaz and Gustavo Flecha, a talkative Cuban taxi driver, discuss politics, migration, social conditions, and love. Through their conversations and personal stories, a broader portrait of the historical and social conditions of their respective countries emerges. As their dialogues unfold, the real reason for Lav’s presence in Cuba comes to light: he is searching for Juan Mijares Cruz, a former Filipino general who fled the country after the end of the Marcos dictatorship. Cold and violent, Cruz is hiding in a remote finca, far from civilization and history, where an inevitably malignant everyday life takes place.
